Film Screenings and Dialogue
Film Screenings and Dialogue
We believe in bringing cinema closer to communities, transforming everyday spaces into pop-up theaters and hosting cross-border screenings that open dialogue on human rights and cultural exchange. Our commitment to fostering cultural understanding and social cohesion through film is reflected in a series of impactful projects, totaling seven local screenings and engagement events in 2021, one in 2022, and another in 2023, each designed to not only entertain but also to ignite crucial conversations within diverse communities.
Among our key initiatives, the Five x Five project, implemented in 2021, embarked on a mission to revitalize film culture in Libya and promote peacebuilding efforts through the power of cinema. This project successfully brought impactful Libyan films to audiences across diverse cities, utilizing alternative spaces to traditional cinema theaters. It showcased a selection of award-winning films by renowned Libyan filmmakers, each exploring vital themes of peace, reconciliation, and social cohesion. These films, recognized internationally for their artistic merit and powerful narratives, provided audiences with a window into the complexities of Libyan society, thereby igniting conversations around peacebuilding efforts. Following each screening, the Five x Five project facilitated engaging discussion sessions, encouraging audiences to share their views and reflect on the peace situation in Libya, fostering dialogue, understanding, and a sense of community around shared aspirations for a better future. The project’s impact extended beyond immediate screenings and discussions; it played a significant role in normalizing cinema culture by bringing film to diverse communities, helping re-establish film as a valued form of cultural expression and entertainment within Libyan society. Additionally, it motivated aspiring and established filmmakers, encouraging them to create films that contribute to positive social change and reflect the realities and aspirations of the Libyan people, demonstrating the power of film to foster dialogue, empathy, and understanding, and contributing to ongoing peacebuilding efforts within Libya.
Further enhancing this mission, the Khotwa project culminated in a final screening event attended by key decision-makers and filmmakers, fostering connections and facilitating important discussions within the industry. Separately, a community engagement event was held as part of The LFI Directory project, which aims to increase the reach of local artists across various cinematic disciplines and provide a gateway for filmmakers to access necessary knowledge and opportunities in the cinema field. Most recently, a community engagement event on March 18th, 2023, in Tripoli, featured the screening of a documentary film. This screening was followed by a facilitated discussion, encouraging participants to reflect on the situation of migrants in Libya and explore ways to improve it, while also focusing on developing future projects to continue promoting social cohesion. Through these varied initiatives, we consistently leverage the power of film to engage communities, stimulate dialogue, and contribute to positive social change.
